Born on 5 September 1953 Victor Davis Hanson is 70 years old as of 2023. He was born and brought up in a family of farmers at Selma, located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. A significant portion of his childhood was spent at a farm in Selma where he worked and grew up to be a farmer and classicist. 

Victor is an American national with Welsh and Swedish ancestry with a zodiac sign of Virgo according to his birth date. Being a Virgo his personality traits are practical, humble, hard-working and creative. Even though Hanson thought of becoming a lawyer he ended by doing a B.A. in classics from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

In 1975 he graduated from the  University of California with general Cowell College Honors and a BA Classics degree. After getting graduated Victor pursued PhD in Classics at Stanford in 1980. Before that, he got a doctoral fellowship to research Athens at Stanford. 

While pursuing his PhD Victor was a fellow senior of Martin and Illie Anderson in classics and military history at Hoover Institution, Stanford University.  Pursuing a career as a classicist he found out there wasn’t much work he could do so he went back to work on his farm. 

Family & Relationships

The first female judge Pauline Davis Hanson, in California and a school administrator William Frand Hanson were Victor Davis Hanson’s parents. Growing up Victor also had siblings Nils and Alfred Hanson with whom he used to work on the farm. While working on the farm their parents used to ask them “What are you doing?” If caught sitting. 

The question still lingers in Victor’s mind and motivates him to labor on his farm. During his time on the farm, he inherited a tragic worldview from his parents and grandfather who died in the Battle of Okinawa. After an established career he married Cara Webb Hanson on 18 June 1977, their marriage lasted till 2005 when they got divorced. 

Later, Victor went on to marry Jennifer Heyne in 2013. Victor Davis Hanson had three children Susannah Merry Hanson, William Frank Hanson and Pauline Davis Hanson. Unfortunately, his daughter Susannah Merry Hanson, a research analyst passed away at the age of 27 due to illness on 13 November in Los Angeles. 

Career

Completing his education Victor Davis Hanson’s career started from becoming a professor of classical studies at Fresno, California State University. Teaching for a considerable time Hanson received annually given awards to top undergraduate teachers of Greek and Latin in the nation. 

The award was distributed by the American Philological Association for Excellence in Teaching which Victor won in 1991. During that time he was also a visiting professor of classics from 1991 to 1992. After 1992, he went on to be a National Endowment for the Humanities fellow in behavioral science till 1993 at Stanford.  

In 1999 Victor received another accolade, Alexander Onassis for a traveling fellowship to Greece. From 2002 to 2003 he was a Military historian visiting the Shifrin Chair at the Naval Academy of U.S, Annapolis, Maryland. His political commentator career started around 2004 when he retired from other work. 

Hanson went on from political writing to being appointed at Claremont Institute and Hoover Institution as a fellow in California studies. Since 2004 he has also been involved in writing a weekly column for National Review Online and Tribune Content Agency. 

Other than these agencies he has written columns for the New York Post, Wilson Quarterly, City Journal and more.
